Who can apply?

All international students who have been offered a place to study at The University of Waikato are eligible to apply for an Excellence scholarship. You do not need to have applied for a scholarship through a partner organization. If you are an international student who has already received an offer from us, you should consider applying for both University scholarships and those offered by partner organizations; scholarships that may compliment your academic achievements or aspirations, but there is no requirement that applicants complete university partnership application forms to be considered for an Excellence scholarship.

Selection criteria

The scholarships are open to students from all over the world, except for students from Australia. In addition, there is a specific set of criteria students must adhere to. The scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis, with strong preference given to excellent academic achievement and extracurricular activities. Students from developing countries will be given added consideration as they have demonstrated greater financial need than their peers. Award recipients will also be required to have completed at least one year of post-secondary education before being able to study at the University of Waikato.

How do I apply?

There are two steps to applying for a University of Waikato International Excellence Scholarship. The first step is to get your application form and documents ready: Applicants must complete their application form, which can be downloaded from here. This must be signed by an academic (or professional) referee who knows you well and will provide a personal reference on your behalf.

What does the scholarship cover?

University of Waikato international excellence scholarships include living expenses, tuition fees, and travel to and from your home country. Other scholarships may provide you with additional funding for other study costs such as accommodation, meals, or books. All applicants will be ranked by a scholarship jury based on their academic merit (at least 40% is usually made up of results from an external examination) and will then be awarded points that depend on their non-academic merit: previous experience; any extracurricular activities they are involved in; socioeconomic background; gender balance (if applicable); links to our programs and any other special circumstances.
